Currently accepting owner surrender:
Owner surrender is accepted under specific circumstances. They accept stray animals found within the City of Chula Vista, National City, Imperial Beach, and Lemon Grove. Owner surrenders are accepted on a case-by-case basis, depending on available kennel space. For the past two years, shelter has frequently been over capacity and unable to accept most surrenders.
Appointments are recommended, but walk-ins are also accepted.
Procedure for pet relinquishment:
For owned pets, the staff evaluates requests individually and may only accept if space allows. Owners are also encouraged to network their pets through friends, family, and rescue contacts.
Fee to accept the animal:
Cats: $60
Dogs: $75
Litter of puppies/kittens: $75
Rabbits: $25
Reptiles: $25
Rodents: $10
“Other” species: $10
Preference for the age of the animal:
All ages are accepted.
Solutions used in situation of going over capacity:
They work closely with rescue partners, foster networks, adoption promotions, and community volunteers to move animals into appropriate placements. They also practice managed intake and rely on community support to help balance our capacity.
Placement of the animals:
Most animals are housed in kennels at the shelter, but many are placed into foster homes especially kittens, medical recovery cases, or animals needing extra socialization.
Euthanasia:
While they do perform humane euthanasia for animals that are severely ill, injured, or unsafe to rehome, they are committed to saving every healthy and treatable animal possible.
